Overview

Hip and knee pain can range from sharp, acute injuries to chronic, activity-related strain, and the two are often connected — the hip and knee share load, movement patterns and stabilising muscles, so a problem in one area frequently affects the other.

Knee pain commonly develops from sporting activity, running, lifting, sudden injury or gradual strain, with many people experiencing pain at the front of the knee, discomfort around the kneecap, stiffness with bending or straightening, or swelling after activity. Hip pain can develop from sporting activity, prolonged sitting, lifting or gradual strain, often felt around the side of the hip, outer hip or glutes, or travelling into the groin or upper thigh — sometimes making it uncomfortable to lie on the affected side.

We assess how your hip, knee, ankles and surrounding muscles are functioning together to help identify possible contributing factors to your symptoms.

Why People Seek Treatment

  • Knee pain with walking, running or exercise
  • Pain around the kneecap or front of the knee, or stiffness bending and straightening it
  • Pain when climbing stairs or squatting
  • Outer hip pain or glute pain, sometimes travelling into the groin or thigh
  • Hip pain when walking, running, exercising or lying on the affected side
  • Reduced hip or knee mobility or difficulty with everyday movement
  • Post total knee replacement rehab, with approval from your surgeon

How We Can Help

Treatment is tailored to your sensitivity and the underlying drivers of your pain, whether that’s in the hip, the knee or both. This may include dry needling, gentle mobilisation and soft tissue release, alongside practical strategies for day-to-day management.

Rehabilitation typically involves strengthening and movement control around the hip and knee, and may extend to core stability and movement patterns through the pelvis and trunk where relevant. Where appropriate, and with guidance or approval from your treating surgeon, we can also assist with post-operative rehabilitation following hip or knee procedures as part of a coordinated recovery plan.

Goals for Treatment

  • Reducing hip or knee pain, stiffness or swelling
  • Offers non-medication-based pain management
  • Improving hip and knee mobility and movement confidence
  • Identifying posture, loading or activity factors which may influence your symptoms
  • Supporting hip and knee stability and muscle strength
  • Building strategies for long-term self-management and rehabilitation

Treatment may include: dry needling, joint mobilisation, joint manipulation, muscle energy techniques, soft tissue massage, stretching and movement-based rehabilitation.
